James was responsive to our request for a quote, for felling a large ash tree we suspected had died. He replied to messages quickly, turned up when he said he would, and was correct that our tree had in fact died. James was professional the whole time and we would have no hesitation in hiring and recommending him to others in the future.

Crown thinning experts (forestry)
What is crown thinning?
Crown thinning is a forestry technique used to selectively remove branches from the tree’s canopy to improve air circulation, increase light penetration, and reduce the weight of heavy limbs. Unlike crown reduction, which reduces the overall size of a tree, crown thinning retains the tree’s natural shape while enhancing its structural integrity and health. This technique is often performed on mature trees to minimize risk and promote sustainable growth.
How much does crown thinning cost?
The cost of crown thinning depends on the size, type, and condition of the tree, as well as accessibility:
- Small Trees: Crown thinning for smaller trees typically costs between £150 and £300.
- Medium Trees: Thinning for medium-sized trees ranges from £300 to £600.
- Large Trees: For larger or more complex trees, costs can exceed £600, particularly if specialist equipment or additional safety measures are required.

Why would trees need crown thinning?
Crown thinning is performed for several reasons, including:
- Improved Air Circulation: Reducing dense foliage minimizes the risk of fungal infections and improves tree health.
- Increased Light Penetration: Thinning the crown allows sunlight to reach the ground and lower branches, benefiting surrounding plants and enhancing the overall landscape.
- Reduced Risk of Damage: Removing heavy or weak branches reduces the risk of breakage during storms or high winds, improving safety.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Thinning can enhance the natural beauty of a tree, improving its appearance and maintaining its shape.
Other crown thinning FAQs
Is crown thinning the same as crown reduction?
No, crown thinning involves selectively removing branches to improve light and air penetration while maintaining the tree’s natural size. Crown reduction reduces the overall height and spread of a tree.
When is the best time for crown thinning?
Crown thinning is typically performed during the tree’s dormant season, usually in late autumn or winter, to minimize stress on the tree.
Can all trees be thinned?
Not all trees are suitable for thinning. Consult a professional to assess your tree’s species, age, and condition before proceeding.

BiggarLandscaping did a great job with my garden overhaul. The price was good, the quality of the work and materials high, the job was done efficiently and everyone was easy to get on with. I would recommend highly based on my experience
You can see the reviews on a other website I am on, it’s called Nextdoor. We are reliable, trustworthy and have great customer service. We have a great eye to detail. We do most garden work, including weeding, trimming hedges, edging, maintaining soil beds, pressure washing patios and driveways, removing rubbish and - if you like your stripes - we also do grass!
I hired Lawn Rangers to grind down 8 tree Stumps for an agreed price of £500. Unfortunately they were not up to the job and struggled with their very small underpowered grinder that they brought to site.....not to mention their grinder broke down twice which meant they had to leave early and only managed to grind down 3 stumps and not finish the job. Later I received their invoice demanding full money for their time even though the job was not completed. I will never use them again.
